Apple iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8 and other foldables: Specs, price and features
Apple brings a 7.6-inch folding display and titanium construction
DUBAI – Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, bringing its first flexible-screen iPhone to the UAE with a starting price of Dh8,499.
The device opens into a 7.6-inch display while retaining a 5.4-inch outer screen for conventional smartphone use, putting it directly into competition with established book-style foldables.
The iPhone Duo arrives at a time when Samsung has already reached its eighth-generation Galaxy Z Fold, while Google, HONOR and other manufacturers are also pushing increasingly sophisticated foldable designs. Apple's answer is not simply a larger screen, but a combination of titanium construction, a redesigned hinge, nano-texture display technology, A20 Pro performance and iOS 27 features designed specifically around the folding form factor.
iPhone Duo specs
The iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display and a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Both screens have the same aspect ratio and support ProMotion, Always On functionality and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
The inner screen also has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections while making the fold crease less noticeable. Apple says the inner display is 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the outer display provides 90 per cent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
The device is built around a grade 5 titanium body and a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. Apple has added Ceramic Shield 2 to the front and Ceramic Shield to the back, while the handset carries an IP68 rating for water, splash and dust resistance.
Apple says the hinge is designed to support the centre of the display when open and provide controlled movement when opening and closing. The inner screen uses additional protective layers, including high-strength glass, a scratch-resistant coating and a titanium support plate.
Performance and software
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. The processor is paired with a custom vapour chamber for thermal management, a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Apple says the A20 Pro delivers up to 35 per cent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, with the CPU up to 20 per cent faster than A19 Pro and the GPU up to 40 per cent faster and more power efficient.
The device runs iOS 27, which has been adapted specifically for its two-screen design. Split View allows two apps to run side by side for the first time on an iPhone, while users can open two windows from the same app and save pairs of apps for later use.
The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned to sit vertically along the side, while controls and the Dock can move to the side of the display to leave more room for content. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among the apps already adapted for the larger screen.
Apple Pencil support is also coming later this year, allowing the USB-C version of the stylus to work across both displays.
Cameras
The iPhone Duo has a dual 48-megapixel Fusion camera system comprising a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
The main camera supports up to 48MP photographs, zero shutter lag, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability. The ultra-wide camera supports macro photography.
For video, the main camera can record 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 frames per second. Cinematic effects can be added after recording, while the folding design allows the phone to stand on its own for hands-free photography and 4K time-lapse recording.
Apple has also introduced foldable-specific camera features. Duo Preview allows subjects to see a live preview on the outer screen, while Smart Take uses on-device AI to determine when people are ready for a photograph. Duo FaceTime allows people on the other side of the phone to participate in a call through the outer display.
Battery and connectivity
The iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery architecture, with batteries placed on both sides of the folding device.
Apple rates it for up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display and up to 31 hours using the inner display. When the two displays are used equally, Apple says users can get up to 24 hours of use per charge.
Wired charging can reach 50 per cent in about 20 minutes, while MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50 per cent in around 30 minutes.
The handset is eSIM-only, with Apple saying eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers. In the UAE, this includes e& and du.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, along with the C2 cellular modem.
iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8
The closest rival is Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, which has already established the book-style foldable format.
Both phones have 7.6-inch inner displays, but the designs differ considerably. The Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a 5.5-inch cover display, compared with 5.4 inches on the iPhone Duo. Samsung's inner screen has a 120Hz refresh rate and a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Samsung's biggest advantage is weight. The Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201g, while Apple is positioning the iPhone Duo around a premium titanium construction and foldable durability rather than simply minimising weight.
Samsung's Fold8 uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor and has 4,800mAh battery capacity. Samsung rates it for up to 26 hours of video playback and supports 45W wired charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
Its camera system includes 50MP wide and 50MP ultra-wide cameras, with up to 10x digital zoom. Unlike some previous Samsung foldables, the Fold8 does not support the S Pen.
In the UAE, the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at Dh7,199 for 256GB, compared with Dh8,499 for the 256GB iPhone Duo. Samsung's 512GB model costs Dh7,999, while the 1TB version is Dh9,599.
That gives Samsung a clear price advantage at the entry level, although Apple offers its own advantages in hardware-software integration, camera features and the wider iPhone ecosystem.
Other major rivals
Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold takes a different approach. It has a 6.5-inch outer Super Actua display and an 8-inch inner folding display, making its unfolded screen larger than both the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold8.
It uses Google's Tensor G6 chip and has 16GB of RAM, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB. Its triple rear camera system includes a 48MP wide camera, 10.5MP ultra-wide camera and 10.8MP 5x telephoto camera. Google rates battery life at more than 24 hours and supports wired charging to 50 per cent in about 30 minutes.
HONOR's Magic V6 is another notable UAE competitor. It costs Dh6,999 for the 16GB+512GB configuration and combines a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor with a 6,660mAh silicon-carbon battery, 80W wired charging and 66W wireless charging. It also has a 64MP periscope telephoto camera alongside its other cameras.
This makes HONOR particularly competitive on battery capacity and charging speed, while the iPhone Duo focuses more heavily on Apple's ecosystem and the integration of hardware with iOS.
UAE price and availability
The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky. Apple has confirmed a UAE starting price of Dh8,499 for 256GB, rising to Dh9,349 for 512GB, Dh11,049 for 1TB and Dh13,599 for 2TB.
Pre-orders begin at 4pm UAE time on October 16, with availability from October 23.
At Dh8,499, Apple's first foldable sits above the entry-level Galaxy Z Fold8 and HONOR Magic V6 in the UAE, while its top 2TB configuration reaches Dh13,599. The pricing makes the Duo one of the most expensive mainstream foldable smartphones available in the market.
The bigger question, however, is whether Apple's approach can persuade existing iPhone users to make the switch. Samsung has spent years refining its foldable hardware, while Google and HONOR have pushed screen size, battery technology and camera capabilities. Apple's advantage is its control over both hardware and software, giving the company an opportunity to make the foldable experience feel like an extension of the iPhone rather than simply a phone with a flexible screen.
For buyers in the UAE, the iPhone Duo therefore represents a particularly premium entry into the foldable category. It is more expensive than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and HONOR's Magic V6, but Apple is betting that its titanium design, display technology, A20 Pro chip, camera system and iOS 27 experience will justify the premium.
